Sandhya Biography

Going from the dental surgery to the stage is hardly a well-trodden path to stardom, but then newcomer Sandhya's background is different to that of her contemporaries.

The talented 22-year-old singer/songwriter has had a somewhat nomadic upbringing. After being born in Salford, Sandhya grew up in Kerala, India and Sharjah, UAE before finally moving back to the UK to study dentistry. This rich cultural upbringing, from the beautiful lush surroundings of Kerala to the shadows of Manchester, is reflected in Sandhyas music which is a hybrid of musical styles from around the globe.

A classically trained Indian singer and musician, she also draws inspiration from the likes of Beyonce, Jewel and Kanye West when writing her songs. With the help of producer Ashish Rama, these diverse ingredients create a stimulating melting pot where eastern spices meet western flavours.

Sandhya and Ashish have been working together since 2003. After auditioning 100s of hopefuls, the young producer was struck by Sandhya's charisma and extraordinary talent as a singer and songwriter.

At a time when the British alternative scene is so strong, Sandhya hopes to be the standard-bearer for Britains female solo artists.

I write, sing and co produce all my songs, so most of my songs actually have a meaning behind them and I think a lot of the things I sing about are topics and feelings that other people can relate to. Sandhya

Despite being in the early stages of her pop career, Sandhya has already supported multi-million selling US artist Montell Jordan at the Carling Academy, Islington.

Blessed with an uncompromising talent and a wealth of experiences, this 22-year-old songstress is well on course to strike a major blow for British female singer/songwriters. As a student dentist, Sandhya has become accustomed to loud screams but will she be able to cope with the adulation?
