 Meenakshi Sheshadri is a renowned Indian actress and a distinguished classical dancer. Born as Shashikala Sheshadri on November 16, 1963 in Sindri, Jharkhand, she adopted the screen name Meenakshi when she appeared in Subhash Ghai’s blockbuster film ‘Hero’ opposite Jackie Shroff.


Meenakshi’s both parents were originally from Tamil Nadu, however since her father worked at the Sindri Fertiliser plant, she was brought up in Jharkhand and Delhi. Meenakshi attended the Mount Carmel in New Delhi during her father’s tenure in Delhi. Initially Meenakshi’s dancer mother taught her Bharatnatyam and later she was trained in four different Indian classical dance forms.

Mennakshi was crowned as the Miss India 1981 at an age of 18 after which she received countless offers from filmmakers. She first appeared in the 1982 release Hindi film ‘Painter Babu’ opposite veteran actor Manoj Kumar’s younger brother Rajiv Goswami. The film failed at the box office and Meenakshi did not receive favorable response. Shashikal then re-christened to Meenakshi and appeared in the 1983 blockbuster ‘Hero’.



Directed by ace filmmaker Subhash Ghai, ‘Hero’ starred Meenakshi Sheshadri and Jackie Shroff in the lead roles. ‘Hero’ became a box office success and Meenakshi consolidated her status in the Hindi film industry.

Meenakshi appeared in a number of films like ‘Awara Baap’ alongside Madhuri Dixit and Rajesh Khanna, ‘Bewafai’ alongside Rajnikant and Rajesh Khanna, ‘Meri Jung’ opposite Anil Kapoor, ‘Inaam Dus Hazaar’ opposite Sanjay Dutt, ‘Shahenshah’ alongside Amitabh Bachchan, ‘Vijay’ opposite Anil Kapoor. Meenakshi Sheshadri had the privilege of working with the best Bollywood banners as well as distinguished actors.

Known for her angelic beauty and impeccable dance performances, Meenakshi Sheshadri is among the few actresses who did not stereotype their on screen image. Meenakshi’s magnetism would add oodles to liveliness to every film she worked in. Though she was been appreciated for all her films, her groundbreaking performance was seen in ‘Damini - Lighting’ released in the year 1993.

Directed by famed filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi starred Rishi Kapoor, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Sunny Deol, Amrish Puri, Tinu Anand and Paresh Rawal; however Meenakshi played the protagonist, Damini in the film. The film was based on the sensitive subject of injustice towards a rape victim. ‘Damini’ became a mega success and received a number of awards including the coveted National Film Award. Meenakshi was accolade for her versatility and display of varied set of emotions on screen.

The flamboyance of Meenakshi Sheshadri dazzled the silver screen in nineties appearing in films like ‘Aadmi Khilona Hai’ alongside Govinda, ‘Kshatriya’ alongside veteran actors like Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna. Meenakshi played the female lead in 1996 blockbuster ‘Gathak: Lehal’ opposite Sunny Deol. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, ‘Ghatak’ was Meenakshi’s last film.

Meenakshi Sheshadri retired from cinema after getting married to investment banker Harish Mysore and the couple is blessed with two children, daughter Kendra and son Josh. Meenakshi lives in Sugarland, Texas with her family and teaches Indian classical dance forms, namely Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi and performs with her students at charity events and fundraisers. A philanthropist, Meenakshi Shesadri and her disciples performed at the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) convention in California.

 Meena Durairaj is one of the most successful actresses in South Indian cinema. Meena was born on September 16, 1977, in Chennai, She became heroine at a very young age of 13 while doing her 8th grade . She established hereself in some matured roles and that making her a very successful heroine.

Meena started her career as a child artist in the film Nenjangal in 1982 when she was 5 years old featuring Dr Sivaji Ganesan in the lead role. She later became a heroine in 1990 at the age of 13 in the film Oru Pudhiya Kathai. Before that, she did a short role in the film Karthavyam which was dubbed as Vijayshanthi IPS in the same year .

Meena was still very young at that time she was doing child roles. Her mother Rajamallika brought her to A.M.Ratnam's office for an offer. Even though she looked chubby, they felt she fitted the bill.

She has acted with Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan and Chiranjeevi and later became a the star in her own right. She had hits with films like Muthu, Ejaman, Veera , Avvai Shanmughi and Mutamestri.

Following the release of her movies with Rajinikanth in Japan and their commercial success, Meena's popularity rose in Japan. She has acted in almost all the south Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada etc., opposite almost all the leading actors .

She was in the film industry as the top heroine in Telugu and Tamil for almost one and a half decades successfully from the early 1990s. She often portrayed characters with unidimensional personality with no negativity or grey shades. She was known to restrict glamourous roles though she has acted in a few like Maaman magal in Tamil opposite Sathyaraj and Muta Mestri in Telugu opposite Chiranjeevi. In the Kannada remake of Autograph, she essayed Sneha's role of Divya. Meena was a judge for a dancing competition 'Mastana Mastana Season 1' in Sun TV.She is currently starring as the lead actress in the Sun TV serial Lakshmi.

Rajinikanth’s Kuselan (Kathanayukudu in Telugu) got a lukewarm response from Rajini’s diehard fans and critics. Meena, who acted in the film in a significant role opposite Pasupathy, has said that she was not happy with the way the kuselan team treated her

She is an only child to her parents. She did her schooling till 8th std in Vidyodhya schools in Chennai. Busy with her acting schedules she had to discontinue schooling in 8th grade, later taking up private coaching and completed her 10th grade. She went on to get her MA in History from the University of Madras through open university system 2006.

Meena acted as a married woman in a 1990 DD TV Serial (Anbulla Amma) with famous tamil actresses.

When the make up artist failed to turn up at a remote village in Kakinada during the movie shoot of "Bobbili Simham" in 1994, it is known that Roja Selvamani did Meena's hairstyles for those two days for a song involving Meena and was much appreciated by Meena herself.Roja Selvamani and Meena are best friends. Her another close friend is actresses Maheswari.Roja and Meena, in their younger age, resembled each other so much. Infact Meena has acted as Roja's younger sister atleast in 5 or 6 movies in Telugu.

Born 1933 into a poor Parsee theatre family of Ali Bux and dancer Iqbal begum in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Entered films to support family in difficult times. She was six when hired for Leatherface (1939) in 1939 by Vijay Bhatt and named Baby Meena. Later she became Meena Kumari when cast for Bhatt's Baiju Bawra (1952). She did mythological films with Homi Wadia and then comedies like Miss Mary (1957). She became personified as the archetypal good Hindu wife through many roles, long suffering and always true to the man. She excelled at tragedy and was often shown in a white sari carrying the film with her emotive acting. She was also thought to be the only actress who could sell a film on the strength of her name alone. Her major films are Daera (1953), Baiju Bawra (1952), 0046164, and of course her most well known film, Pakeezah (1972). She was married to Kamal Amrohi with whom she started making "Pakeezah". They separated in 1964. She was also an accompalished Urdu writer and had several poems published by Gulzar after her death. She battled alcoholism and loneliness and finally died, alone, in 1972.

Mahjabeen was born on August 1, 1932 in Dr. Gadre's Clinic in Bombay, India to a Muslim father, Ali Bux, and a Hindu mother, Iqbal Begum (Nee Prabhavati Tagore). She has two sisters Khurshid and Madhu.

Mahjabeen wanted to study in school but was compelled to act in Hindi movies as a child artiste, and ended up becoming the sole bread earner of the family. She first appeared in a 1939 movie 'Leatherface' and was cast as Baby Meena in the predominantly Hindu movie industry in British India that was yet to see the day as Bollywood.

Meena Kumari went on to act in a total of 94 movies, in a career that spanned from 1939 through to 1972. She become a household name after her performances in 'Baiju Bawra', 'Parineeta', 'Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam', 'Kaajal' as well as received 'Best Actress' awards for these titles.

In 1952 she got married to Kamal Amrohi, and had a son named Taajdaar. The marriage was harmonious and resulted in joint movie ventures, namely 'Daera' and 'Pakeezah'. Neither knew that the latter would take over 14 years to complete.

A few years after the marriage, Kamal and Meena started having differences, and started to drift apart, and finally divorced during 1964, leaving 'Pakeezah' incomplete.

'Pakeezah' was finally completed and released on 4 February 1972, but flopped at the box office. A few weeks later Meena was hospitalized in St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home, but passed away on March 31, 1972 due to liver problems.
